Do you really expect a good designer to dig or vice versa?  Funny?

1. Be a strategist- The idea is to understand the role of an architectural designer -receptor of your requirements and hub of all design activity. Can you think of designing a box being enclosed? Check up the regulations & hire a competent professional. Be aware of the trends and discuss them in detail before implementation.
2. Be a leader- Best professionals in the industry can give you detailed documents, specifications & activity charts and that's it. It is your prerogative to hire and co-ordinate contractors if you have family or friends support. Else go in for integrated project management team.
3. 2 after 1 please.
